The first time I realized that exercise and training needed to be a permanent part of my life was when I was 15. At the time I struggled with crippling depression and anxiety, so bad some mornings it was so hard to get up it felt like my depression was there in the room with me, holding me down not letting me get out of bed. That wasn’t the driver to get me to exercise though.
The driver was worse.
One day at work (high school dropout working his first job) I got increasingly dizzy to the point where I was falling over and collapsing randomly throughout the day. I got home from work that night and things got worse, I couldn’t see straight, my head felt like it was going to explode and my sister (who I was staying with at the time) called the 24-hour nurse and was told to not wait for an ambulance but to rush me to hospital herself. I got there and went straight into the emergency ward with a handful of doctors doing tests and frantically trying to figure out what was wrong with an otherwise healthy 15-year-old boy.
After 30 minutes another doctor from a different ward walked passed and asked what was going on. They told him my symptoms and he immediately asked if I was on anti-depressants, I had completely forgotten I was. I was trying to get off them (mainly because I felt like they made me someone I was not), taking half a tablet every second day, except the last few days I’d forgotten. What I was experiencing was the potentially fatal withdrawal from (thankfully now banned) anti-depressants.
This is where my passion for helping people through exercise and wellness was born, my belief that without exercise we cannot be at our best both mentally and physically.
